Browse the self-guided gallery space and then join a ranger on a 30-45 minute guided program that explores five period rooms showing what TR's childhood home looked like. Learn the early influences on Theodore’s life that would carry through to his adulthood achievements. The estimated length of the whole field trip is 60-90 minutes. Good for grades 3+.
Scheduling a reservation:
Currently, the Birthplace can only accommodate reservations at 10:00 AM, Wednesday-Sunday.
The group size must not exceed 36 people, including all staff and chaperones. Adult chaperones must be provided at a ratio of one adult for every ten students. If your group has more than 18 people, they will be split in half for two abbreviated tours
Reservations are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Please be flexible, as you may not get your first or second choice of dates.
Please note, we do not have on-site facilities for eating. Nearby Madison Square Park and Union Square Park offer outdoor seating.
Contact thrb_info@nps.gov to request a reservation. Include your requested date, the number of people in your group, and the grade(s) of the students.
Location:
The site is located at 28 E 20th St. in Manhattan, between Broadway and Park Ave. South. We highly recommend using public transit to arrive at the site, as there is no street parking for buses. There are some parking garages located in the vicinity of the site.
Preparing for the visit:
Once your reservation is confirmed, there are three important steps in planning any field trip to Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace:
1. Teach at least one unit on Theodore Roosevelt prior to your visit to Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace.
Adequate class preparation is essential to tie your curriculum with the material covered during your field trip to the Birthplace. Students who have at least some background information on Theodore Roosevelt will have a much better experience at Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace than those who do not.
For ideas, see the curriculum materials section of our website.
2. Bring your class here on schedule and be prepared to spend 1-1.5 hours at the site.
Please arrive promptly at 10:00 and check in with a Park Ranger in the lobby. If a group arrives late, the tour(s) may have to be shortened.
3. Groups larger than 18 should be split in half ahead of time.
To minimize confusion and stay on schedule, groups of more than 18 people should be split in half ahead of time. This includes all staff and chaperones in attendance. We recommend assigning each student, staff member, and chaperone “group 1” or “group 2.” Group 1 will tour the upstairs residence while group 2 will browse the gallery, and then they will switch.
