Field Trip: The Villages

Learn about the life of the Hidatsa tribe that lived in the villages at Knife River Indian Villages NHS. The park ranger will guide students through interactive presentations in the museum, the earth lodge, and in the village (on the trail). Program also includes the 15 minute introductory park film. The teacher can work with the park ranger before the field trip to taylor the activity to meet the class needs. The teacher can choose from the following topics:
 

  • Roles and Responsibilities of people within the community; 
  • Trade Relations
  • Effects of trade on technology used by the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara during the 1800s; or
  • Languages: Hidatsa and Plains Indian Sign Language.
