Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to live on a farm in the 19th century? What kinds of crops would have been grown at White Haven? What was the importance of Ulysses S. Grant's family to his later success as a Civil War General and two-term President?

"Farming and Family at White Haven" teaches students about Ulysses S. Grant's life as a St. Louis farmer and the loving relationships he had with his wife Julia and his four children. Students will learn about farming and the many roles each family member would have had to take on in order to help manage the White Haven property. They will also briefly learn about the institution of slavery and the lives of the enslaved laborers at White Haven before the Civil War. This field trip is tailored for lower elementary students, Kingergarten through grade 2. The field trip cosists of three different activities at the park:

  • A 22-minute film about Ulysses S. Grant's life

  • A room-by-room tour of White Haven

  • A hands-on activity in the Park Museum about Grant's love for his family

This field trip lasts 90 minutes long with about 30 minutes time at each activity station. Please note that only 15-20 people are allowed inside White Haven at one time. Schools with more than 20 students will be broken up into smaller groups and rotate between the three activities during the field trip.

Interested schools may contact the Education Coordinator at 314-842-1867 ext. 229 to schedule a field trip. Field trips may be scheduled on the top or bottom of each hour between 9AM and 3:30PM.
