Dwellings of Fort Larned: An Earthy Experience

Grade Level:
Upper Elementary: Third Grade through Fifth Grade
Subject:
Social Studies

This field trip experience helps students understand the process the Army and civilian workers went through to decide which building materials to use for the structures at Fort Larned.

The buildings at Fort Larned evolved from crude dugouts, to sod and adobe structures, to the sandstone buildings still standing today. As each type of building was constructed decisions about construction materials and methods had to be made based on availability and time. Students will have an opportunity to go through the decision-making process for each type of stucture, as well as participate in hand hand activities related to building those structures.
