Keeping in touch with friends and family was a challenge on the American Frontier. Those who lived across the American West in the mid-to-late 19th century had limited choices of how to communication from town to town as well as with those who lived back East. From sending a letter by a horseback rider, to using steamboats, communication on the frontier evolved rapidly from the American Civil War until the late 19th century with the creation of new technology. The Pony Express acted as an interim mail service until the telegraph and the railroad made communication with the rest of the United States in a timely manner a reality for those on the frontier.
