STEPS
- Choose your Carl Sandburg Home NHS adventure
- Prepare for your adventure to the park
- Go on your adventure
- Adventurous Hike
Hike the Memminger trail loop. This trail is .9 miles offers beautiful views of the park and mountain landscape in any season. It is rated as easy with less than 50' in elevation change. - Outdoor Game Hike
Play a fun game while on a hike at Carl Sandburg Home NHS. The best trail to play a game on is the Front Lake Trail. It is a relatively flat .40 mile loop around the lake. You can also use the amphitheater to play a game after your hike. (Check the park calendar of events before you visit to make sure another program isn't scheduled at the amphitheater, or call ahead).
Choices - Pick one after Adventurous Hike or Outdoor Game Hike
- Act out your adventure! Use the amphitheater stage or your Girl Scouts meeting space. Act out what you saw on the trail. Can you stand tall like a tree or wave your arms like bird wings?
- Draw a picture of your adventure! Draw a picture of yourself exploring the park. Make sure to add any plants or animals you might have seen along the way! Share your picture with your troop or family.
- Create a plan for when you will visit the park and what supplies you will need for your adventure.
- Practice safety! What safety precautions will you need to take to be safe while out exploring?
- Plan what trails you will hike and what games you could play. Do you need any supplies for this?
- Be well rested! Make sure to have a good night’s sleep and full stomach before beginning your adventure.
Choices-Do one:
- Goat Yoga! It’s important to stretch your muscles before going out on a hike. What better way to do that then hanging out with some furry friends? Can you do the tree pose? Stand on one leg, bend your knee, place the sole of your foot on your inner thigh, and balance. Can you sway like a tree? What about the chair pose? Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart, bend both knees and hop like a goat kid! What are some other good warm up poses you can think of?
- Warm up exercise! It’s important to slowly warm up your body with some simple stretches before beginning a hike. Try doing these for about 20-30 seconds each, starting with jumping jacks. Now move your arms in circular motions forward and then backwards. Can you walk forward while lifting your legs to hug your knees? What other good warm up exercises do you know?
It is finally time for your big trip out to Carl Sandburg Home National Historical Site. Make it fun by choosing one of these activities to do while on your adventure.
Choices-Do one:
- Learn how to follow a map and read a compass. Do you know how to find North? What about South, East or West? Can you show everyone on a map where you are?
- Teach a friend! Can you teach a family member or friend all the fun things you learned today at the park?
