We invite teachers, students, writers, and community members to craft poems based on the stories of Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Themes include the first people in the valley, the park’s geologic history, and the Ohio & Erie Canal.
This powerful tool for creative expression was developed by staff of the Wick Poetry Center at Kent State University. Its lessons and interactive activities are built on Wick’s innovative tools: Thread and Emerge. Thread allows participants to add their voice to growing community poems on the park’s themes. Emerge creates opportunities to respond creatively to primary texts.
Explore the toolkit and consider how you can use it to encourage your students’ self-expression. Toolkit activities can also serve as ways to build on a field trip or distance learning program with park staff.
