Great Sand Dunes is home to not just deer and bears and mountain lions. There are over 1,000 identified species of insects in this park and many are endemic, meaning they live here and only here. Come find out how this pile of sand can be so rich in habitats.

Hands-on activities and short walks appropriate for all ages and abilities. Inquire at the Visitor Center (719-378-6395) about the availability of Dunes wheelchairs if appropriate.

Duration: 1 hour

Group size: No more than 30 students per ranger. Larger groups may be accomodated if multiple rangers are available.

Availability: Varies. If coming in spring, schedule your program between 9am and 1pm, Monday through Thursday.

Meeting place: Dunes Parking Lot

What to bring: Clothing and footwear appropriate to all varieties of weather. We will be outside! If the creek is flowing, be prepared to get your feet wet and perhaps bring a change of clothes as well. Consult Field Trip Guidelines for Leaders for more information.
