Essential Question
How does what you call home, and your responsibilities change over time?
Objective
Charles Young was born enslaved and became the first African American to attain the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Army. Young called several places home during three distinct stages of his life: when he was a youth, a junior officer, and a seasoned veteran. Discover what changed in his life during these five eras of Charles Young’s life from where he called home and what he was responsible for.
Background

Preparation

Have students split into an even number of groups, at least 2 students per group (group sizes are at the discretion of the teacher).
Procedure
Students will learn about different stages of Brigadier General Charles Young's life.This includes when he was a youth, junior officer, and a seasoned veteran. At each stage, students will identify where he called home and what he was responsible for and compare what changed over time.
Vocabulary
Home: the place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or household, the place one lives
Responsibility: the state or fact of having a duty to deal with something or of having control over someone. Ex: "a true leader takes responsibility for their team and helps them achieve goals"
Buffalo Soldier: nickname applied to African American soldiers who served in an all-Black unit in the Army between 1866 and the Korean War
