Essential Question

How can students demonstrate their understanding of the battles of the Southern Campaign by recreating holiday decorations?

Objective

As a result of this lesson plan, students will demonstrate their knowledge of the battles of the Southern Campaign fought in SC by creating holiday pieces through art.

Background

Teacher must have and implemented an understanding of the battles of the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution.
 

Preparation

Teacher can use as an assessment tool of understanding of material covered. Lesson requires knowledge of people, places, events relating to the American Revolution and those battles of the Southern Campaign fought in SC.

Materials

Lesson Hook/Preview

Christmas - play short clip from how the Grinch Stole Christmas/or song segment
Halloween - It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown
Thanksgiving - Kids can create a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day float - replica possible show most famous floats
Easter - creative eggs “ Hop” Purple Platoon” - squad of ninja rabbits
Lead kids into a discussion as to how they could relate these clips to the Battles in SC
Grinch -Tarleton
“Hop” Squad - militia Overmountain men
Major players - Macy balloons
 

Procedure

Step One:
Allow students to pick from Holiday list:

  • Christmas - Ornament, wreath, recreation of a Christmas song, present
  • Halloween - pumpkin, mask, design a new costume
  • Thanksgiving - centerpiece, headpiece, Macy’s Balloon or float
  • Easter - basket, egg
Step Two:
Teacher will provide materials for students

Step Three:
Allow time for creation

Step Four:
Share ideas and creations.

Step Five:
Throughout the year the teacher could display student work during that holiday season.
