Additional Resources

Sultana Projects offers a wide variety of John Smith related educational materials for use in the classroom. Developed in conjunction with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and actual classroom teachers, Sultana's educational materials meet MSDE's voluntary guides for standards and content and are designed to be easily integrated into a classroom setting.

The following materials are available free of charge to classroom teachers and schools (pending availability):

  • Echoes of 1608 Classroom Poster - a full-sized wall poster featuring a large version of John Smith's 1612 map of the Chesapeake as well as interpretative information about Smith's voyage.
  •  Exploring the Chesapeake, 400 Years Ago and Today - a full-sized National Geographic poster that contains detailed descriptions of Captain John Smith's 1608 voyages as well as information about the modern challenges facing the estuary in the 21st century

Sultana Projects also offers a history-based classroom program for those schools located in or visiting the Chesapeake Region.  The program Echoes of 1608: English and Indians on the 17th Century Chesapeake, introduces students and teachers to the world of the 17th century Chesapeake Bay as seen through the eyes of English explorer John Smith and the Native American tribes he encountered. Using period images, historic artifacts, and hands-on activities to bring the past alive, Sultana instructors connect teachers and students with the English and Native American cultures, history, and natural environment of the 1608 Chesapeake.  Contact us to learn more about how you can schedule a Sultana Projects' classroom program.
