Amazing Animals

Grade Level:
Lower Elementary: Pre-Kindergarten through Second Grade
Subject:
Science

Zion is home to many unique animals. From the spiky horned lizard to the night-loving ringtail, the wild inhabitants of Zion have adapted to survive and thrive in this unique landscape. While mule deer and rock squirrels are well adapted to Zion’s scorching summer temperatures, many other animals avoid the heat of the day altogether. A majority of the wildlife in Zion are nocturnal. By night, you may hear a coyote’s call, see the light quickly gleam in the eyes of a gray fox, or observe the nimble movements of a ringtail cat. Other charismatic animals, such as mountain lionbobcatporcupine, skunk, raccoon, badger, bats, and beaver are all active under the cover of darkness.

This program will introduce youth to Zion National Park and its diverse landscape, and then highlight some of it's most charismatic inhabitants. Participants will interact with a ranger in real time as photos, videos, and activities engage them in learning.
