About

The National Historic Landmarks Program of the Northeast Region assists Landmarks in the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia. These 13 states are home to approximately 1060 Landmarks that represent the diverse history of the Northeast. Among them are the USS Nautilus, Eluetherian Mills, Harriet Beecher Stowe House, Accokeek Creek Site, Old North Church, Canterbury Shaker Village, Lucy the Margate Elephant, African Burial Ground, Fallingwater, Fort Adams, Socialist Labor Party Hall, Jackson Ward Historic District, and Wheeling Suspension Bridge.

Most NHLs in Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia are overseen by the Northeast Regional Office. However, the National Capital Regional Office oversees NHLs in five counties in Maryland (Allegany, Frederick, Montgomery, Prince George's, and Washington), four counties in Virginia (Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William), three independent cities in Virginia (Alexandria, Fairfax, and Falls Church), and five counties in West Virginia (Berkeley, Hampshire, Jefferson, Mineral, and Morgan).

The Northeast Region National Historic Landmarks Program provides guidance and technical assistance in partnership with stewards, agencies, organizations, and communities to identify, document, protect, and preserve National Historic Landmarks within the region. This includes assistance in the preparation of Landmark nominations, historic preservation plans, historical documentation, planning, and education.
