    A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 99,600 visitors to Steamtown NHS in 2016 spent $5,403,500 in communities near the park. That spending supported 86 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $7,432,400.

    “Sing Across America” brought young people together to express the human connection to nature through song, and to celebrate national parks and special places in their communities. The project was coordinated by artist Louise Phillips, who wrote the lyrics to the “Children’s Earth Anthem.” Charles Eversole, Artistic Director for the Singing Angels, composed the music.

    Biscayne National Park recorded 514,708 visits in 2016, the centennial year of the National Park Service. While there were only slightly more visitors to the park in 2016 than the 508,163 visitors recorded in 2015, camping and tour visits increased by 10% and 11% respectively.

    Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore received a record 777,428 visits in 2016, the park's 50th anniversary and National Park Service's centennial year.

    Crater Lake National Park saw record visitation for the second year in a row with 756,344 recreation visits in 2016. This is a 23 percent increase over the 614,712 visits in 2015 and a 41.2 percent increase over 2014.

    Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, the national park that stretches from the city of Los Angeles west into Ventura County, recorded 906,606 visits in 2016.

    During the National Park Service Centennial in 2016, visitation to national parks increased by nearly eight percent, including an overall 13 percent increase at Channel Islands National Park.
