NPS NPS Historical LandscapeStones River National Battlefield maintains several hundred acres of restored native grasslands. These open fields help tell the history of the battle and the natural landscape.Historically, much of the southeastern United Stated was covered by native grasslands. These open areas were biodiversity hotspots, filled with tall grass and wildflowers that support a wide variety of wildlife. Grassland BiodiversityNative grasslands are some of the most diverse ecosystems in North America. Grasses and wildflowers create a rich environment where many species thrive together. Grasslands provide food and shelter for birds, small mammals, and many insects, including bees and butterflies, which are essential pollinators. This biodiversity makes grasslands strong and resilient ecosystems.Fire Brings LifeFire is a natural part of grassland ecosystems. Many native plants are adapted to survive and even depend on fire that clears away old growth, opening space for new plants and recycling nutrients back into the soil. Without fire, grasslands can be taken over by trees, shrubs, and invasive plants, reducing their biodiversity.Restoring the Natural LandscapeStones River National Battlefield has restored several open areas back to native grasslands. These spaces bring back the beauty and ecological importance of the landscape. The park uses prescribed fire, carefully planned and controlled burns, to keep grasslands healthy. This practice helps native plants grow, supports pollinators, and ensures these habitats remain part of the battlefield for future generations. |
