 If you are here for a short time and want to focus on the basics, viewing the park film online ahead of time will provide context. When you arrive you can explore the collection of totem poles and ceremonial objects in the visitor center and chat them with rangers.  Sitka is the homeland of Tlingit people. Learn about Tlingit history, art, and culture through exhibits, demonstrating artists, ranger-led activities, and the park film.  Take a day to familiarize yourself with the three major significances behind the creation of Sitka National Historical Park: Russian colonization in North America, conflict between Tlingit and Russians leading to the Battle of 1804, and perpetuating traditions in Alaska Native art and culture.  It is easy to find a wide variety of wildlife in the park. You can tidepool on the edge of Sitka Sound, explore habitats in spruce-hemlock and alder forests, and observe salmon spawning in Indian River. Depending on your time and interests you can focus on one area or type of wildlife or sample many.
