Crystal Cave

Sequoia Parks Conservancy has announced the closure of Crystal Cave for the 2024 season.

The road, trail, and visitor facilities at Crystal Cave sustained damage during the 2021 KNP Complex wildfire and extreme winter weather in early 2023. Sequoia Parks Conservancy is working closely with the National Park Service to restore access to the public in 2025.

Crystal Cave is among the many noteworthy features of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

 

Visiting Crystal Cave

Crystal Cave is an excellent example of a marble cavern. A half-mile loop trail leads through the cave, and there's also a steep half-mile walk to and from the cave parking area to the entrance. Because of fragile formations, the only way to visit the cave is on a guided tour. Tours are suitable for all ages. If you decide to see the cave, plan on spending about half a day traveling to the cave, walking to the entrance, and taking the 50-minute tour.

Guided tours of Crystal Cave are offered from spring through fall by our partner, the Sequoia Parks Conservancy. Buy tickets online at least 36 hours in advance, but we recommend you purchase two months in advance of your visit. Tickets are not available at the cave.

Tours are typically offered between 10 am and 4 pm, Thursday through Sunday (closed Monday–Wednesday).

On the day of your tour, be very sure to leave enough travel time to make it to the cave on time for your tour.

Bring jackets; the temperature inside is 50 degrees F (10 degrees C). Before buying tickets, check other important information about tours.

Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs) and American Sign Language Tours Available

Assisted Listening Devices allow visitors with hearing loss to have the tour naturalist’s voice amplified through headphones, or directly into hearing aids with the assistance of a t-coil loop. ALDs are available to every tour group.

Tablets that provide interpretive information in American Sign Language (ASL) during the tour are also available. There is no extra charge and no reservation is necessary. If preferred, visitors can request an ASL interpreter in advance by contacting the SPC Field Institute at [e-mail].

Directions

Vehicles over 22 feet and those towing trailers are not allowed on the narrow and curving Crystal Cave Road.

Crystal Cave is near the Giant Forest in Sequoia National Park. From Foothills Visitor Center: turn right on to Generals Hwy. Drive 13 miles (20 km). Turn left on to the Cave Road—look for the sign as you enter Giant Forest. Drive 6.5 miles (10 km) to the parking area. From Lodgepole Visitor Center: turn left on to Generals Hwy. Drive 6.5 miles (10 km) through Giant Forest. Turn right on to the Cave Road. Drive 6.5 miles (10 km) to the parking area.
