Wildland fire engines play a dynamic role in fire management operations throughout the national parks. Stationed in Three Rivers, California, Engine 72 is the primary wildland engine for Sequoia National Park. The crew calls Hammond Fire Station home, the location of which gives them direct access to both the primary foothills areas and high-elevation sites like the Giant Forest and Mineral King. The firefighters on Engine 72 are not only suppression resources. They are fire managers as well. They are trained in the use of many tools, such as fire hoses, drip torches, radios, and chainsaws, so that they may best manage fire on the landscape. During prescribed burns, Engine 72 implements both holding and firing operations to meet the objectives of the parks’ fire ecology program. Engine StatisticsNWCG Type 3 |
