Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site is starting preservation and restoration work this week and going through mid-summer. A contractor hired by the National Park Service will be replacing much of the charging bridge and casting shed roof of the blast furnace. This maintenance project will replace aging wooden beams, decking, and other elements to maintain and improve safety and condition of these structures.

SALEM and SAUGUS, MA — The Salem Maritime and Saugus Iron Works National Historic Sites will be participating the 2021 Boston Area City Nature Challenge (CNC) and invites the public to join in the effort. On May 1, we will have staff collecting data at the park units submitting to the wider data collection effort. This year’s CNC will run from April 30 - May 9, with April 30 - May 3 being the observation phase and May 4 - May 9, 2021 being our time to help improve identification in the CNC. They will once again be documenting biodiversity within the I-495 corridor, out to Stellwagen Bank, and include Cape Cod and islands. Anyone can participate from your own backyard or your favorite nearby public open space.
