Sites

There are four missions and three other sites in the park. You can jump ahead to the location you plan on visiting by using the "Locations" selector below.
 
 

Mission San José

Visit the "Queen of the Missions", the largest mission site of all 5 missions along the San Antonio River and where our park visitor center is located!

Information Desk

  • As you enter the building, there is an information desk to your left.
  • There are large print brochures available upon request.
  • There are braille brochures available upon request.

Tactile Exhibits

There are tactile maps in the San José Visitor Center, located at 6701 San Jose Dr, San Antonio, TX 78214.
  • There are tactile maps of each mission with raised lines within the museum.
  • There is a bronze miniature model of Mission San José stationed inside the compound, closest to the entrance gate. During the hot summer weather, the bronze will be hot to touch. Proceed with caution.
  • There is a 3D miniature of the grinding stone on the “Grist Mill” wayside.
  • There is a 3D tile of Ethel Harris’ agave tile with indentations and braille on the “Ethel Harris” wayside.

Exhibits

  • The visitor center features a museum with exhibits where you can learn about the history of Mission San José!
  • The museum has glass displays embedded into the wall that has artifacts and is primarily text-based.
  • There are no audio descriptions available for the museum and wayside content.
  • There are some exhibits inside the museum that are dimly lit for preservation purposes, so it may be hard for some visitors to see the content.
  • The exhibition rooms near the granary are well-lit, however, the information on the exhibits is delivered in small print and is primarily text-based.
  • Other alternate formats of this exhibit are not available.

Theater

There is no audio description available for the park’s film.
 

Mission Concepción

Visit Mission Concepción, one of the oldest unrestored stone churches in the United States and explore original Spanish colonial architecture and frescos!

Information Desk

  • As you enter the site, there is a contact station with an information desk to your right.
  • There are no large print brochures available.
  • There are no braille brochures available.
  • There is audio description about Mission Concepción available on the NPS app.

Tactile Exhibits

There is a bronze miniature model of Mission Concepción available near the entrance. The bronze may be hot to touch due to the summer heat and sun. Proceed with caution.

Exhibits

  • The convento (the convent) of Mission Concepción has exhibits where you can learn about the history of the area.
  • There are no audio descriptions available for the waysides or exhibits’ content.
  • Some rooms inside the convento may be dim, depending on the natural light outside.
  • Caution of low overhead doorways when proceeding into the convento rooms.
 

Mission San Juan

Visit Mission San Juan and enjoy a short nature trail, explore a historic acequia, and see the farm fields that are still in use today!

There is audio description available on the NPS app about Mission San Juan, but there are no audio descriptions available for the exhibits or wayside content.

Tactile Exhibits

There is a bronze miniature of Mission San Juan’s architecture in in the compound, located by the West Gate. The bronze may be hot to touch due to the summer heat and sun. Proceed with caution.

Exhibits

The contact station features exhibits where you can learn about the history of Mission San Juan!
  • The exhibits will undergo renovation to improve accessibility in 2025.
  • The exhibits are positioned at a tilt, so some text may be difficult to read from a lower position.
  • Some areas of the contact station may be dimly lit.
 

Mission Espada

Visit the peaceful Mission Espada and imagine the evolving community that once called this site home! There is audio description about Mission Espada available on the NPS app.

Information Desk

  • The information desk is in front of the contact station’s entrance.
  • There is a braille brochure available for loan.

Tactile Exhibits

There is a bronze model in Mission Espada’s compound located closest to the entrance at 10040 Espada Rd, San Antonio, TX 78214.

Exhibits

  • The visitor features exhibits where you can learn about the history of the area!
  • There are panels that have artifacts and text attached to them.
  • The bastion exhibit has little-to-no lighting to peer through the glass door. There is a paper that shows the shape of the bastion and a description, but there is no alternate format for it.
  • There is no audio description available over the exhibits or wayside content.
 

Rancho de las Cabras

This site is only accessible through guided programs provided by San Antonio Missions National Historic Park. Program length is approximately 2 hours. Reservations required with limited availability and first come first serve. To reserve your spot please saan_interpretation@nps.gov and include your name, email, phone number, and number of people in your party.

Exhibits

There is a wayside closest to the entrance of Rancho de las Cabras. There is no audio description available for that wayside or for the site itself.
 

Espada Aqueduct

The site of the Espada Aqueduct is located at 9045 Espada Rd, San Antonio, TX 78214.

This site is meant to be self-guided. There are no restrooms, drinking fountains, or picnic areas in this site.

Viewing Area

There is audio description about the Espada Aqueduct available on the NPS app. There are no audio descriptions available for the wayside content at the Espada Aqueduct.
 

Espada Dam

The site of the Espada Dam is located at 399 Mission Pkwy #373, San Antonio, TX 78214.
  • This site is meant to be self-guided.
  • Closest restrooms and picnic area are at the Acequia Park across the road, with standard portapotties.

Viewing Area

  • There is audio description about the Espada Dam available on the NPS app.
  • There are no audio descriptions available for the wayside content at the Espada Dam.
