During the Civil War, the United States Military occupied downtown Beaufort South Carolina as a command center for operations up and down the southeast coast. Many of the historic homes, churches, and commercial structures you see throughout the Beaufort National Historic Landmark District served as offices, hospitals, and quarters for military officials - and some were purchased at tax auctions by formerly enslaved people, most notably Robert Smalls.

The park headquarters and visitor center is located in the Old Beaufort Firehouse at 706 Craven Street, Beaufort, South Carolina.
