One of the oldest foot trails in the Presidio, Lovers' Lane is an easy, one-mile walk. The trail begins at Funston Avenue & Presidio Blvd., crosses a tiny brick footbridge over the creek running down Tennessee Hollow from El Polin spring, passes enlisted men's and officers' houses from the 1930s and ends at the Presidio Boulevard Gate. Presidio lore has it that this path continued to Mission Dolores about three miles to the southwest. Although it is likely that the Presidio to mission path followed a slightly different course, it is certain that U.S. soldiers used Lovers Lane to access the trolley line to visit their lovers and family in San Francisco starting in the late 1800s. |
