Subject: downed tree work on Bear Valley Trail

The large Douglas fir that lost a codominant top Sunday night due to strong winds will have the compromised remaining top removed on Wednesday May 21. The contractor expects Bear Valley Trail to be closed (between Meadow Trail and Old Pine Trail at Divide Meadow) to visitors from around 8:15 am to around 5 pm.

Subject: Tree Failure and Continuing Hazard on Bear Valley Trail

During the high wind event this afternoon [Sunday, May 18], the top of a Douglas fir failed on Bear Valley Trail just beyond Meadow Trail. An 18" section along with part of a bay laurel are obstructing the trail and it is not passable to vehicles.

More importantly, there are additional large branches that are hung up directly above the trail and at risk of landing on the trail.

After doing SPE [severity, probability, and exposure] risk assessments, we used a saw to improve a path through the debris to reduce hiker time in the hazard zone. However, additional work appeared unsafe until winds died down.

There are currently signs warning of the hazard at the Bear Valley Trailhead, Bear Valley/Meadow junction, and on the far side of the tree on Bear Valley Trail.

The full moon rises May 14. And, at end of the following week, Comet 209P/Linear will provide a dramatic meteor shower on May 24 as the earth passes through the comet's dust and debris.

Northern elephant seal numbers are rising as seals return to lose their fur in what is referred to as a "catastrophic molt". They will look blotchy with patches of older darker skin and lighter newer skin. Many seals have been seen on pocket beaches around Chimney Rock.

Unusual and exciting sightings in past weeks have included orcas traveling north past the Lighthouse.

The wildflower parade continues with stocky, tall cow parsnip—which has thick stems and large white flowers—appearing along roadsides. It has been an incredible year for poppies and iris displays.

The first snowy plover eggs have been laid in nests in the reclaimed dune areas around Abbotts Lagoon. Docents will be on hand Memorial Day weekend to provide insight into these plucky little birds.

Expanded services begin Memorial Day: The Lighthouse will be open Thursdays from May 29 through August 28. The Kenneth C. Patrick Visitor Center at Drakes Beach will be open weekends through Labor Day from 10 am to 4:30 pm.

On Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, the annual commemoration will take place at the Lifesaving Service Cemetery beginning at 2 pm honoring surfmen who served along the treacherous Point Reyes coast.
