Wednesday, January 15, 2014 Mt. Vision Road is closed today, Wednesday, January 15, due to a Red Flag Warning. January’s full moon—which occurs this year on Wednesday, January 15—is known as the Wolf Moon amongst many tribal communities and is a period of deep snow and listening to the sound of wolves howling. Clear dry weather means bountiful whale sightings from the Lighthouse over the past weeks. Is the weather making sightings easier OR is the migration early this year? No answers yet. Check the webcam at the park website before heading out. Heavy fog late last week shutout whale viewing. Northern elephant seal activity grows as more and more females return to the outer beaches. D-9 is marked on the dominant (or alpha) male of the Drakes Beach colony. If you are watching the seals and see what appears to be a human with a stick "poking" a seal, it is most likely researchers dye marking seals. Studies are underway on the movements of males around park sites and on how females are responding to temperature changes. Volunteers are needed for planting along Olema Creek on Saturday, January 25. Meet at the Bear Valley Visitor center at 9:45 am to go out to the planting areas along Highway 1 north of Olema until 2 pm. Check the park website for full details at nps.gov/pore. New artwork at Bear Valley Visitor Center from local photographer Cooper Jolley may be seen throughout January and February. Monday, January 20, 2014, is the federal holiday Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. The Bear Valley and the Lighthouse Visitor Centers will be open and shuttles will be operating, if the weather is clear. |
