Wednesday, August 29, 2012 Labor Day weekend nights will be illuminated by a very bright moon--which may be visible from Point Reyes, if the fog permits. The full moon occurs on August 31 and will be accompanied by mid-day high tides. On Sunday, September 2, visitors planning to arrive in West Marin via the Point Reyes-Petaluma Road through D Street in Petaluma are advised that a community parade with possible congestion is planned for that area of Petaluma beginning at 11 am celebrating the Little League team. Alternative routes include Lucas Valley and Sir Francis Drake Highway. Sunday is also Sand Sculpture Contest Day--a free, fun event at Drakes Beach with registration beginning at 9 am and judging at noon! Fall reminders are everywhere: cool mornings; splashes of brilliant red poison oak are coloring Limantour Road and Papermill Creek. Blackberries and huckleberries are in full fruit. Use caution in blackberry picking--poison oak is often found amidst berry bushes. The park hosts a 50th anniversary commemoration on September 8 with a tree planting ceremony from 10 am to 11 am at Bear Valley Visitor Center and a ranger walk that afternoon from 1 pm to 2 pm at Limantour Beach. All park visitors centers are open on Monday of Labor Day weekend; roads and trails as well.
