A telephone conference was held this morning with the contractor that has been hired to perform the restoration of the lighthouse. His plan is to start work on Wednesday, July 18 or on Monday, July 23.
Initial work in July will involve the dismantling and removal of the lens and the clockwork mechanism from the lighthouse tower. During this period, the stairs leading down from the observation deck will be closed on the days when this work is being conducted, but the visitor center and the pathway to the observation deck/top of the stairs will remain open. Work during this phase could be seven days a week.
Sometime in late August or early September, work will begin on the walkway from the parking lot leading to the observation deck/top of the stairs. This work involves removing all of the asphalt and pouring concrete and providing a more accessible pathway for the public. Depending on whether the path will be safe to walk, the visitor center may be open Friday through Sunday. However, it is very possible that once the contractor begins this phase, there might be no public access beyond the parking lot.
Definitive dates and complete details are still being worked out, so please check back later.
