Piney Point Lighthouse Museum and Historic Park is in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, and preserves the history of Piney Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1836 and was the first to be constructed on the Potomac River. It served as a beacon of safety for mariners and travelers of the river for over one hundred years before being decommissioned in 1964. The site offers activities, exhibits, and tours which explore the lighthouse’s history and importance.

The surrounding park protects the landscape of the lighthouse and offers numerous recreational activities for its visitors. A museum and maritime exhibit interpret the life of watermen who worked on the Potomac River. A kayak launch, a pier and boardwalk allow visitors to experience the Potomac River first-hand. The park is open from sunrise to sunset, year-round. Guided tours of the lighthouse and keeper’s quarters are available daily.
