This stone building is the only historic structure on the peninsula that pre-dates the first patients. It was constructed in 1853 as a Calvinist church. Congregation members reportedly cut coral rock from the nearby reef to melt into lime for the mortar used in cementing lava rocks in the church walls.

After the Kalaupapa Settlement was established and earlier inhabitants moved away, the structure was modified several times. Over the years it has served as a jail, a repair shop, a warehouse, and a fire station.
