Scenic View/Photo Spot

During an eruption, lava will sometimes encounter living trees that can withstand the heat of the lava long enough to leave behind an impression in the cooling lava. The impressions standing trees leave behind in the rock are called lava trees. Horizontal impressions from trees that were knocked over are called tree molds.

The Lava Trees are located 150 feet (46 m) off the Wilderness Trail, approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from where the Wilderness Trail splits off from Broken Top Loop. A sign marks their location. Additional lava trees and tree molds are found throughout the area. Be prepared if you plan to explore the wilderness.
