Kinderhook's native son passed away on July 24, 1862, just four months shy of his 80th birthday. In the midst of Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln honored President Van Buren's 40 years of public service with this General Order.

After a funeral at the Dutch Reformed Church on Broad Street in the village, President Van Buren was buried next to his wife Hannah and their son Martin, Jr., just three miles away from his beloved Lindenwald.
