He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1851. Although, from Norfolk, Virginia, Maynadier remainded loyal to the United States during the American Civil War and was a part of the 10th Infantry Regiment and then the 12th Infantry Regiment. In March 1866, Maynadier took command of Fort Laramie. He retired from the Army in August 1866 due to illness, and died on December 3, 1868 at Oglethorpe Barracks in Savannah, Georgia.
