Was born in Piqua, Ohio. She married Andrew Sheridan Burt on September 13, 1862. Andrew Burt was stationed at Fort Laramie twice, in 1874 and again from 1887-1888. The quarters they lived in from 1887-1888, is still in existence and is known as the “Burt House” and is decorated as it was when the Burt’s lived there. Within the Fort Laramie museum collection are around 100 items belonging to the Burt family. Many of these collection objects can be seen in the exhibit rooms in the Burt House. Included within this collection are two cookbooks belonging to Elizabeth Burt. Because of her diaries and extensive letters to family members, in 1912, she took those writings and published her life story in “An Army Wife’s Forty Years in the Service 1862-1902.” This publication was later edited by Merrill J Mattes as “Indians, Infants, and Infantry.”
