How to Apply
The National Maritime Hertiage Grant Program administers Preservation and Education Grants for eligible prime grantees with one-to-one matching funds.
Currently available grants will be listed on our General Grant Information page. Once Notices of Funding Opportunities are made available, eligible prime grantees may apply for one of our grants through Grants.gov. For help in determining if you are eligible to apply for a National Maritime Heritage Grant, please see our Application Information page or our Frequently Asked Questions.
The National Park Service cannot accept applications submitted outside of the Grants.gov portal. We also cannot accept emailed applications. Detailed instructions on how to apply for a grant are included in the Notice of Funding Opportunities.
Grants.gov is the government-wide database that hosts grants and serves as the portal through which applicants apply for grants. Before registering with Grants.gov, new applicants will need a Unique Entity ID issued by SAM.gov.
For more information on the National Maritime Heritage Grants process, see our Frequently Asked Questions.
Detailed instructions on registering with Grants.gov and SAM.gov in preperation for grant application can be found at the bottom of this page.
Application Tips
We don’t know. Funding for NMHGP grants is non-appropriated (not from congress) and are transferred from MarAD. We strongly recommend applying for a NMHGP grant when funding is available!
Does the 1:1 match have to be all in cash, can it be all in-kind, or can it be a percentage of each and if so, what percentage must be cash?
The 1:1 match (to include in-house projects and subgrant program projects) may be a combination of cash and in-kind.
There are no percentage requirements. However, the value of in-kind needs to be documented, including volunteer time, and verifiable from the recipient's records (outlined in 2 CFR 200.306(b).)
The NMHGP utilizes some of the sample documents and guidance from the Historic Preservation Fund to include sample documents and resources for the value of donated labor.
If you would like to subscribe to receive email notifications about grant opportunities associated with specific search criteria, such as funding instrument type, eligibility, and sub-agency, follow the instructions on the Subscribe to Saved Searches page on grants.gov. After creating a saved search, you may view the search results or modify the saved search in the Actions column.
1. A complete application includes all required forms as described in the Notice of Funding Opportunity.
Remember to submit Project Description Worksheet, the Project Images Worksheet, and the Budget Justification Worksheet.
2. Good photographs help reviewers understand your project! Show overviews of the resource and specific areas where funding will be used whenever possible.
3. Reviewers may not know about your resource. Clearly explain the resource and what you are proposing, why it matters, how much it will cost, and how it will be completed.
4. Make sure the proposed budget and project items are clear.
5. Be realistic about the timeline for the proposal and remember to budget for reporting, compliance reviews, subgrant selection process tasks, draft documents, and other hiccups that may occur along the way.
Our checklist below may help you stay on top of submission requirements!
