Visiting New Philadelphia

New Philadelphia National Historic Site is at 29766 306 Lane in Barry, Illinois. The site is 26 miles east of Hannibal, Missouri, and 77 miles west of Springfield, Illinois.

There is no fee or cost to visit the site.

• Site grounds are open 24 hours daily.
• An information kiosk is at the park entrance. Stop here for brochures, Passport to Your National Parks® stamps, and outdoor exhibits. Wi Fi is available.
• You may explore the grounds. This includes the 1/4-mile walking trail, gravel street, and grounds around the Burdick House.
• Paved parking is available at the information kiosk. There is no parking or turnarounds for RVs, busses, or trailers.

Note: Accessible parking is available at the information kiosk. There is no threshold or ground level change from the parking area to the kiosk.

Know Before You Go!

New Philadelphia is a new unit of the National Park Service. Many services are not yet available. Before you visit, be aware of the following:

• Restrooms and water fountains are not available.
• There are no trash cans on site. Please take your trash with you.
• There are no indoor facilities, including a visitor center or gift shop. Pay attention to the weather. Seek shelter in case of lightning or tornados. Find a weather forecast on the current conditions page.
• The site does not currently offer Junior Ranger or ranger-led programs.
• Do not enter any buildings.
• Private property surrounds the site. Be mindful of fences or signage to remain in public areas.
• Park rangers may not be available. If there is an emergency, call 911.
• Collecting is prohibited. The site protects a sensitive archeological area. Please help protect these treasures. Collecting artifacts, digging, and metal detecting are prohibited.

Self-Guided and Virtual Experiences

These self-guided programs are available year-round, at all times of day.

• Explore outdoor exhibits at the information kiosk and along the walking trail.
• Use a mobile device to take a 1/4-mile augmented virtual reality walking tour of New Philadelphia. The full tour takes 45 minutes. It includes moving over mown grass and uneven natural surfaces.
• Watch the augmented reality tour videos anywhere, anytime! You can enjoy the videos onsite or at home.

Additional Trip Planning Information

Accessibility

The 1/4-mile walking trail is a natural surface with mown grass. It is uneven and sometimes muddy in places.

Outdoor exhibits include printed text and images.

The augmented virtual reality tour is accessed through a mobile device. Tour videos include narrations and captions.

Lucy's Garden, behind the kiosk, provides multisensory experiences. Visitors can touch and smell the plants. Do not pick leaves or flowers. Be aware of any stinging insects and give them space.

Service Animals

• Service animals are welcome in all public areas of the site. Service animals are defined as any dogs or miniature horses trained to perform tasks that assist persons with disabilities.
• Emotional support animals or companion animals are also welcome in all public areas. These are animals that provide therapeutic services through companionship.

Driving is the easiest way to visit. There are no public transportation options to access the site.

Directions by Car

• Directions from Springfield, Illinois (84 miles, 1 hour and 15 minutes)
  • Go west on Interstate 72 towards Hannibal, Missouri.
  • Take Exit 20 for Barry.
  • Turn left onto County Highway 4/Rodgers Street. Continue for 0.4 miles.
  • Then turn left onto Illinois 106 East and continue for 1.6 miles.
  • Turn left onto County Highway 2. Continue for 2.7 miles.
  • The site entrance will be on the right.

 

• Directions from Hannibal, Missouri (27 miles, 26 minutes)
  • Go east on Interstate 72 towards Springfield, Illinois.
  • Take Exit 20 for Barry.
  • Turn right onto County Highway 4/Rodgers Street. Continue for 0.2 miles.
  • Then turn left onto Illinois 106 East and continue for 1.6 miles.
  • Turn left onto County Highway 2. Continue for 2.7 miles.
  • The site entrance will be on the right.

 

• Directions from New Philadelphia to Interstate 72 (East and Westbound)
  • From the site entrance, turn left onto County Highway 2.
  • Continue for 2.7 miles.
  • Turn right onto Illinois 106 West and continue for 1.6 miles.
  • Then turn right onto County Highway 4/Rodgers Street. Continue to the Interstate 72 entrance ramps.

Nearest Food, Gas, and Restrooms

A gas station and restrooms are available at the Barry Travel Plaza, 4 miles away. The plaza is by the Interstate 72 entrance, on Rodgers Street in Barry.

There are several restaurants nearby in downtown Barry, on Bainbridge and Mortimer Streets.

Passport Stamps

Passport to Your National Parks® cancellation stamps are available at the following locations. Two stamps are available at each location:

• A stamp for New Philadelphia National Historic Site.
• A special stamp for the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

Pets

Pets are welcome! Visitors may bring their pets to explore the grounds and walking trail.

If you are visiting with your dog, please remember to BARK:

Bag your dog's waste and take it with you. There are no trash cans on site.

Always keep your dog on a leash. For the safety and comfort of all the site's visitors, dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet.

Respect wildlife. New Philadelphia is home to a variety of animals such birds, deer, and squirrels. Please keep your dog at a respectful distance from any animals you may encounter.

Know where you can go. Pets are allowed in all outdoor, public areas.
