Setting is an important part of any story. Medgar and Myrlie were both born and raised in Mississippi. Though they loved their home state, it was a notoriously dangerous place for its black citizens living under the segregated “Jim Crow” system. The Everses fought to change that, putting the nation’s attention on Mississippi and forcing its political powers to accept federal desegregation laws.
