Description

The three part repair to the north porch columns, involves removal of deteriorated material by hand, installation of borate impel rods (non-toxic preservative that releases over time when it gets wet), and installation of hand tooled dutchman repairs. GCA photo by Terri Attridge. Kolb Studio clings to the edge of Grand Canyon. It was the home and photographic studio of Grand Canyon pioneers, Emery and Ellsworth Kolb, and was begun in 1904. Today, this historic studio is open year-round. It contains an exhibit hall, bookstore, and information center operated by the Grand Canyon Association. During 2013 and 2014, with help from donors, GCA is in the process of rehabilitating this valuable piece of Grand Canyon History in order to keep it available for generations to come. Work includeds: Addressing structural degradation of Kolb Studio by: a) rectifying drainage problems from public sidewalks and corresponding retaining walls, b) stabilizing the concrete entranceway to assure safe continuing access to the facility c) repairing and replacing exterior building features (e.g. log and shingle siding, structural beams, gutters, wooden porches) in order to assure long-term structural integrity of the building and d) protecting restored exterior surfaces with paints, sealants and other coatings. www.grandcanyon.org/arts-and-culture/kolb-studio
