Explosive volcanic eruptions can fling clots of lava into the air in some eruptions. Collectively, the fragments ejected during explosive eruptions are termed pyroclasts. Cinders, ash, and volcanic bombs are all pyroclasts.

Scoria, Craters of the Moon National Park & Preserve, 2013.. Scoria used to be called cinder. This pyroclastic rock is made mostly of volcanic materials. Pyroclasts range from the largest agglomerates to very fine ash. These different sizes are classified as volcanic bombs, lapilli and volcanic ash. A cinder is defined by these characteristics: uncemeted, vitric (i.e., resembling glass), having bubble-like cavities or vesicles, typically colored red or black and contains numerous gas bubbles 'frozen' in place as magma exploded into the air and cooled quickly.
