Great Blue Herons in Cuyahoga Valley

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Great blue herons started becoming more common in Cuyahoga Valley after the national park was established in 1974. Their success is tied to the return of the American beaver to Ohio and to the recovery of the Cuyahoga River. Today these large wading birds are a regular sight: flying overhead, hunting along the water’s edge, or raising young in one of several heronries.
