This 1921 photo of Pier 2 shows just an average daily amount of the tremendous military cargo required for overseas. Cargo shipped overseas originated at points throughout the continental United States, often times requiring a long journey to port. During the war, San Francisco Port of Embarkation personnel were responsible for the logistics of moving all the cargo along.

During World War II, Fort Mason was the headquarters for the entire port operation, which included three separate commands: Fort Mason, Oakland Army Base and Camp Stoneman (Pittsburg, CA). In addition to standard army facilities, the headquarters also contained a post exchange cafeteria, a postal center, a theatre, a bowling alley, tennis courts and a barber and beauty shop. In the 1970s, most of these buildings were removed and Fort Mason's Great Meadow was created. Fort Mason is now headquarters for Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

This early photo shows Pier 2 as one the first constructed pier buildings. Many of the other related buildings have not yet been constructed. The flurry of vehicle activity is centered at Pier 2, which is servicing 3 ships on its west side and 1 ship on its east side. Notice that the scale of the ship is fairly comperable compared to the building. In the future, the ships that dock at Fort Mason will be much larger and will eventually loom over the pier buildings.

This photo, circa 1930s, now shows all three piers constructed, as well as the five large administrative and storage buildings. This photo well illustrates how the ships are docked on both sides of the piers so that they can access the cargo more easily.
