Valles Caldera National Preserve has selected five artists to take part in its inaugural Artist in Residence (AiR) program during the 2025 summer season. Through the AiR program, selected artists will immerse themselves in the park’s natural and cultural landscapes to create original artistic works inspired by the setting. During their residencies, they will also share their work with the public through presentations and interactive workshops. Meet this year's artists!

Often referred to as the "father of the atomic bomb", physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer directed atomic bomb development at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project. Tusayan Pueblo Site and Self-guiding Trail

The pueblo site and self-guiding trail are open Thursday through Friday, from 9 am to 4 pm. Located 3 miles (4.8km) west of Desert View Watchtower, the site is a small Ancestral Puebloan village showing the outlines of rooms and a round kiva. Visitors can walk a relatively flat 0.1 mile (200 m) self-guiding trail around the site. Visit the Native American Artisan Market with authentic and beautiful arts and crafts for sale. The adjacent museum is CLOSED until further notice.

On July 16, 1945, Manhattan Project scientists detonated the world’s first atomic device, known as “the Gadget,” at 5:29 am Mountain War Time. The US Army conducted the test at the Trinity Site in the Jornada del Muerto desert about 210 miles (337 km) south of Los Alamos, New Mexico. Today the Trinity Site is part of the White Sands Missile Range and can only be visited during a Trinity Site Open House, typically hosted twice a year.

Best known today for his military campaigns against the Indians before and after the Civil War, George Crook rose from the command of the 36th Ohio Infantry to the command of a cavalry division which fought in Tennessee and southwestern Virginia. During the war he became friends with future president Rutherford B. Hayes.

Middle Cape Campsite

This beach campsite, popular with fishermen, is a long, shelly sand beach on the Gulf of Mexico. There is little shade, and it is exposed to wind in all directions. Campers will find spectacular sunrises and sunsets and unparalleled views of the Gulf or Mexico. Raccoons are in the area; store food and water appropriately.
Fort Jefferson

Fort Jefferson, the largest all-masonry fort in the United States, was built between 1846 and 1875 to protect the nation's gateway to the Gulf of Mexico. During the Civil War, it was used as a Federal prison primarily for Union deserters, though in 1865 three of the Lincoln conspirators were imprisoned within its walls.
East Cape Campsite

This campsite is an open shelly sand beach stretching for several miles along the Gulf of Mexico. Expect expansive sea views as well as magnificent sunsets and sunrises. Ruins of a dock used by an old concession tour may be found here. In the 1830s, Fort Poinsett was located here. Its mission was to thwart suspected arms trading between Indians and Spanish fisherman. Mosquitoes and sandflies may be a problem year round.
Jose Sarria

Military history, LGB culture, immigrant stories, and much more make up GGNRA's roots. For José Sarria, a LGB activist in San Francisco, all the above apply. Born in the Bay Area to a single mother from Colombia, Sarria became the first openly gay, public figure. He ran for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1961.
