The Women’s House of Detention, demolished in the mid-1970s, was a center of activity in historic Greenwich Village for decades. In 1954, riots rocked the Women’s House of Detention. However, it took more than such protests to make change. It also took the efforts of reformers and public servants like Anna Moscowitz Kross, a Jewish-American judge and New York City public official.

Mr. Ho has conducted underwater archaeological site documentation, exploratory marine survey, and a variety of submerged resource science through the NPS system and with international partners in Africa, South America, Central America, and the Pacific Islands. His interest and focus are to aid parks and resource managers in their efforts to locate, document and interpret submerged cultural resources from pre-history through the historic period through today.

Around the world in World War II, economies of the countries at war shrank and consumer consumption fell. The US economy was an exception, described as “a glittering consumer’s paradise,” fueled by a massive increase in employment. American consumers, with money in their pockets for the first time since the Depression, went shopping, out to dinner, and to the movies. Even in the face of rationing and material shortages, they bought new clothes, new homes, and more.
