Nicodemus National Historic Site

St. Francis Hotel

The St. Francis Hotel has lived many lives: first as a place of business operated by early settlers Zachary and Jenny Fletcher, then as private residence and restaurant of the Switzer family. The original two-story limestone structure was built in 1881 and was a successful hotel in Nicodemus. The Switzer family bought the building in 1921 and built several additions while they lived there.

First Baptist Church

The First Baptist Church was the first church in Nicodemus, organized in 1878 by Reverend Silas Lee. The congregation met in private residences, a sod church, and a smaller limestone church until this building was built in 1907. The First Baptist Church served not only as a religious meeting place, but also a community building. The congregation built a new church north of this building in 1975 and are still active in Nicodemus.

Built around 1867, the Blacksmith Shop was an indispensable component of the maritime village. Not only did the shop forge metal works, but it also served as the town's carpentry center. Nearly everyone in town had some need for the blacksmith's services, which included crafting and repairing oxen yolks, tools, and carriages, shoeing horses, and constructing pre-built homes, dining halls, and horse barns.

Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller Mansion

Originally built in 1805 by Charles Marsh Sr., father of George Perkins Marsh, the federal-style brick house was sold to Frederick Billings in 1869. Billings renovated the home into a Queen Anne style mansion. In 1954, Billings' granddaughter, Mary French Rockefeller, inherited the home and estate with her husband, Laurance Rockefeller. In 1992, the couple donated the property to the National Park Service. Interior tours are available May-October.

From Type A through H Cemesto homes- Cemesto being a mix of cement and asbestos- to Types A, B, C, S, and V Flat-Top designs, Oak Ridge’s architectural style was unique in its simplicity, form, function, and space. There are several examples still standing in Oak Ridge as private residences.

Hanka Homestead Museum

The Hanka Homestead was occupied by members of the Hanka family, Finnish immigrants, from 1896 until 1966. Herman Hanka settled here with his family after he was injured in a copper mining accident. The farm was originally homesteaded at a time of mass immigration from Finland to the United States. The homestead is relatively intact and unaltered from its appearance in the 1920s. This museum is an official partner of Keweenaw National Historical Park.

Built in 1918 and known as the "Big House," it served as a seasonal home for the Bond family and functioned as the official ranch headquarters. The living room fireplace and wood-burning stove heated the building, and the cooking was done mostly outdoors. An outhouse was used until the Dunigan family remodeled in the 1980s.

Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River is the home of the oldest existing wire suspension bridge in the United States - the Delaware Aqueduct, or Roebling Bridge as it is now known. Begun in 1847 as one of four suspension aqueducts on the Delaware and Hudson Canal, it was designed by and built under the supervision of John A. Roebling, future engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Register Cliff Historic Site

Following a day's journey from Fort Laramie, emigrants spent the night at Register Cliff , which rises one hundred feet above the North Platte River valley. The soft, chalky limestone rock made it easy for emigrants to inscribe their names into the cliff before continuing on their journey. The earliest signatures date to the late 1820s when trappers and fur traders passed through the area.

Bayard Rustin Residence

The Bayard Rustin Residence is significant as the most important resource associated with Bayard Rustin (1912- 1987), a person of great importance in American political and social history. Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Rustin lived a peripatetic life as a social activist and organizer, living intermittently in a number of different homes. In 1962, Rustin purchased apartment 9J in Building 7 of the new Penn South Complex in the West Chelsea section of Manhattan.
