On the right side of the memorial core, Eisenhower as the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force during World War II is commemorated by a bronze heroic-sized statue with sculptures of his soldiers inspired by the famous photograph with the 101st Airborne Division before their jump into France. Behind the sculptures is a bas relief depicting the Normandy landings on D-Day, June 6, 1944.

The California condor, with a nearly ten-foot wingspan, is the largest land bird in North America. Its range once stretched across the west, south to Baja California, and north to British Columbia. By 1940, this magnificent bird was on the verge of extinction from poaching, DDT contamination, habitat destruction, and lead poisoning from consuming carrion containing lead bullets. Captive breeding programs have helped stabilize the population.
Daniel Webster Monument

Daniel Webster (1782-1852) was a lawyer and Whig party statesman who served as secretary of state for presidents John Tyler, William Henry Harrison, and Millard Fillmore. Previously he served as congressman first for New Hampshire, then congressman and senator for Massachusetts (1845-50). Webster's fame as an orator is captured in a stirring bas relief on the memorial's plinth.

The Grand Army of the Republic was a veterans group of nearly half a million men. It was also the first veterans group in the United States. This memorial honors the veterans who were honorably discharged from the US military at the end of the American Civil War, as well as to the founder of the GAR, Benjamin Stephenson. A memorial to the US Navy had always been part of Pierre L'Enfant's plan for Washingon, DC. However, it wasn't until 1987 that the US Navy Memorial was dedicated. The memorial design features a lone sailor in the midle of a granite sea surrounded by low, stone walls containing 26 bas-relief sculptures illustrating the history of the Navy and the sea services.
La Bajada Mesa

Because of its remote and rugged locale, La Bajada Mesa is among the best preserved and historically significant sections of El Camino Real today, with well-worn tracks, swales and other reminders of travelers past etched permanently into the landscape. By far, the mesa’s most defining feature is at its southwest edge, where the volcanic escarpment upon which the mesa sits towers 600 feet high over the plains below.

White arrived in Santa Barbara in 1828, eventually making his way to Mission San Gabriel—which at that time consisted of little more than a few houses around the plaza, a church, some gardens, and some irrigable land.

The Point at Mori Point

Mori Point is a great place to see marine mammals passing through along the coast. The winter and spring months are great for whale watching. 94% of the worldwide 21,000 gray whale population travel up and down this coast on their 10,000 mile journey between Alaska and Baja California Sur. Adults move south from December to January. Some start heading back north again to feast as soon as February.

Shaw’s agave is a rare and unique succulent plant endemic to a narrow, 200 mile, stretch along the southwestern California and northern Baja California coastline. South of the border, it is commonly found along the undeveloped portions of the western coast of Baja California. North of the border, however, the species has been reduced to just two small and isolated populations, one of which consists of a single genetic individual.

The wart-stem ceanothus is an evergreen shrub native only to San Diego County and Northern Baja California. As a species that requires fire to germinate, it is also threatened in San Diego County by fire suppression, as well as by urbanization. As a result, Cabrillo National Monument is taking steps to help.
