Backcountry Information Center

The Backcountry Info Center is open daily from 8 am–noon; and 1 pm–5 pm, and provides information, permits, and trip planning assistance about day and overnight hikes into the canyon. The building is located in the village by Parking Lot D, and across the railroad tracks from Maswik Lodge. Park in Lot D, then take the free, early morning Hikers' Express bus from Backcountry Info Center to South Kaibab Trailhead.

After serving in the Army, Magdaleno eventually found work at Hanford, doing overhauls on buses, trucks, and large vehicles. Magdaleno spent about twenty years as a mechanic at Hanford from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s.

Navajo Bridge

A historic steel-arch bridge and new counterpart spans the Colorado River side-by-side in northern Arizona. On US Highway 89A in Marble Canyon, AZ approx 45 miles north of Highway 89 turnoff. As you approach the driving bridge, slow down to 25mph. You can pull over on either side of the spans. The Navajo Nation side offers arts and jewelry stands. The Glen Canyon NRA side has a visitor center built out of a 1930s rest area. Park, shop, walk, read about the site, view condors.

From the Sky trail, many routes and loops are available leading into the Phillip Burton Wilderness along the spine of Inverness Ridge, downhill to the coast, or downhill to the Bear Valley area. The habitat changes from forest to coastal scrub and mixed woodland depending on your route. The trailhead is located along Limantour Road, approximately 10 minutes by car from the Bear Valley Visitor Center.
