Bright Angel Trail

Bright Angel Trail lets hikers walk in the footsteps of the canyon's Indigenous Peoples, miners, and early tourists, as they descend into the canyon's depths. Offering big views, morning and afternoon shade, resthouses, vault toilets, and water stations during the summer. The water is OFF at 1.5- and 3-mile resthouses. Bright Angel Trailhead

Bright Angel Trailhead is located just west of Bright Angel Lodge, Lookout Studio, and Kolb Studio. At 6,840 feet (2,085 m), it provides access for hikers and mules to many inner canyon destinations. From the Hermit Road Interchange shuttle bus stops, it is a short walk to the east, and up a hill, on a paved footpath to the trailhead. Manhattan Project National Historical Park
Trinity Site, NM

On July 16, 1945, Manhattan Project scientists detonated the world’s first atomic device, known as “the Gadget,” at 5:29 am Mountain War Time. The US Army conducted the test at the Trinity Site in the Jornada del Muerto desert about 210 miles (337 km) south of Los Alamos, New Mexico. Today the Trinity Site is part of the White Sands Missile Range and can only be visited during a Trinity Site Open House, typically hosted twice a year.

Following a day's journey from Fort Laramie, emigrants spent the night at Register Cliff , which rises one hundred feet above the North Platte River valley. The soft, chalky limestone rock made it easy for emigrants to inscribe their names into the cliff before continuing on their journey. The earliest signatures date to the late 1820s when trappers and fur traders passed through the area.

Only 16 cows and 14 nursing pups remain at the Seashore! There are still 112 males scattered around, looking for their last chance to mate. This year’s weaned pup counts are higher than average. A total of 1063 weanlings were counted on 3/6.

Charles Lee, former British Army officer, became the second highest ranking general of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. On June 28, 1776 he oversaw the victory at the Battle of Sullivan's Island in Charleston, SC. Two years later, his retreat on the field at the Battle of Monmouth Courthouse would result in his court martial and the end of his military career. Learn more about this controversial figure here.

“Kilroy was here”, accompanied by a cartoon drawing of a man looking over a wall, was a popular piece of graffiti drawn by American troops in the Atlantic Theater and then later in the Pacific Theater. It came to be a universal sign that American soldiers had come through an area and left their mark. There are two Kilroy inscriptions hidden in the memorial tucked in the corners of both the Atlantic and Pacific sides of the memorial. Can you find them?

Desert View Watchtower Retail Store (View Room) is open daily: 8 am to 6 pm. The upper floors of the tower are open, when staffing allows, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The last tower access is at 5:00 pm, with the stairs closed for the day at 5:30 pm. A ticket system admits 25 people with a 20-minute time limit. A National Historic Landmark, the Watchtower was constructed in 1932.The design by Mary Colter is based on Ancestral Puebloan architecture found in the southwest.

Opened in 1935, Bright Angel Lodge offers several dining options: Bright Angel Fountain/Coffee and Grab and Go: 5:30 am to 6 pm daily. Fred Harvey Burger: Breakfast: 6:30 am to 10 am, Lunch: 11 am to 4 pm, Dinner: 4 pm to 9 pm daily. Fred Harvey Tavern: 11 am to 10 pm (food until 9 pm) daily. Arizona Steakhouse: . Lunch 11:30 am to 3:30 pm, Dinner 4:30 pm to 9 pm. Bright Angel lodge is located right along the canyon's edge in the Village Historic District.
