Series: The Port Royal Experiment

In the fall of 1861 after the Battle of Port Royal, the US military came ashore around Beaufort and found thousands of now formerly enslaved people in control of the region. The military had no real plan yet for what to do with these people or even their legal status. Newly freed Black South Carolinians were active participants. They demanded access to programs to support labor reforms, land redistribution, quality education, and military service.

Very few of Ellen Murray’s writings have been identified or published. However, not all of Ellen Murray’s writings remained private. Between 1861 and 1865, she wrote at least fourteen poems that she had published in the National Anti-Slavery Standard, a prominent abolitionist newspaper. Her poems offer a glimpse in the world and perspective of one of Penn School’s founders.

The Chesapeake region is a tapestry of natural wonders and cultural heritage, and Vince Leggett, “The Admiral” of the Chesapeake, dedicated his life to preserving African American history and culture in the Bay. Through his Blacks of the Chesapeake Foundation and other efforts, Vince transformed the Bay into a living archive of resilience and connection. As we mourn his passing, we honor his legacy with reflections from those whose lives he touched.
