Spring 2025: Ballet Folklorico

Before Shirley Graham married W.E.B. Du Bois in 1951, she had earned a national reputation as a playwright, composer, conductor, director, and author. Born to a A.M.E. minister and a European mother, Graham was raised to appreciate Black culture and music. From a young age, her parents instilled in her the importance of social justice and the uplift of the Black Community. For her lifelong dedication, we honor her as an ancestor.

Bright Angel Trail lets hikers walk in the footsteps of the canyon's Indigenous Peoples, miners, and early tourists, as they descend into the canyon's depths. Offering big views, morning and afternoon shade, resthouses, vault toilets, and water stations during the summer. The water is OFF at 1.5- and 3-mile resthouses. South Kaibab Trailhead Bus Stop - Kaibab Rim (Orange) Route

Just a 9-minute ride from Grand Canyon Visitor Center, this shuttle stop is the easiest way to access South Kaibab Trailhead. Running from 8 am, to just after sunset this winter, the bus will drop you off next to the water filling station and vault toilets, a short walk from the trailhead. From this location, you also can walk west along the paved Canyon Rim Trail and return to the Visitor Center, a distance of 2.3 miles/ 3.7 km. Visit the link for the current schedule.

Born in the Bay Area to a single mother from Colombia, Sarria became the first openly gay, public figure. He ran for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1961.
Stormé DeLarverie

Stormé DeLarverie was a butch lesbian with zero tolerance for discrimination, or as she called it, “ugliness.” She was born in New Orleans on Christmas Eve to a Black mother and white father. She had a beautiful baritone voice and discovered a love for jazz at a very early age. She started singing in New Orleans clubs at 15, and soon after began touring around Europe, eventually landing in New York City.

The Baldwin Residence is significant for its association with American author and activist James Baldwin. He owned this house and used it as his primary American home from 1965-1987. Baldwin made important contributions to American literature and social history. As a gay Black author, civil rights activist, and social commentator, he shaped discussions about race and sexuality. He was active in literary, political, and social circles, influencing all of them.
