Banastre Tarleton, a British army officer, famously commanded the British Legion, a provincial regiment composed of loyalist infantry and dragoons, in the southern theater under Lord Cornwallis during the Revolution. Feared for his ruthlessness by the patriots, his early successes in the field earned him notoriety. Defeated at the Battle of Cowpens by Brig. Gen. Daniel Morgan, Tarleton's favor with Cornwallis declined. Tarleton was present at the surrender at Yorktown.

Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis and 2nd Earl Cornwallis, served as a British general during the American Revolution and notably surrendered his army to General Washington's Continental army and the allied French forces at Yorktown, Virginia in October 1781. This surrender effectively ended hostilities between British and American forces and led to peace negotiations, ending the war and recognizing American independence. Cornwallis later governed in India.

Chinook Point

On November 15, 1805, after a year and a half of traveling west, the Corps finally saw the Pacific Ocean near Chinook Point. Intense thunderstorms finally subsided on the 15th, which allowed them to move four miles west toward Chinook Point. Boards from a temporarily deserted Chinook Indian village nearby were used to erect shelters. For the next 10 days the Corps used Chinook Point as a base camp to explore the surrounding area, and find a site for their winter encampment.

The Youngs River was originally discovered by Lieutenant William Broughton of the Vancouver Expedition in 1792, who named it for Admiral Sir George Young of the Royal Navy. It would be another fourteen years before the spectacular Youngs River Falls would be discovered by Sergeant Patrick Gass, a member of Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery.

Tamio "Tommy" Kono (June 27, 1930 – April 24, 2016) was a Japanese American weightlifter in the 1950s and 1960s. Kono set world records in four different weight classes: lightweight (149 pounds or 67.5 kilograms), middleweight (165 lb or 75 kg), light-heavyweight (182 lb or 82.5 kg) and middle-heavyweight (198 lb or 90 kg).
