Henry Bakeman

Henry Bakeman enlisted in April 1781, after British and Mohawk troops had destroyed his home village of Stone Arabia in October 1780. Involved first in carrying packages from one Patriot fort to another, resulting in “many skirmishes with the Indiana & Tories,” by late 1782 Bakeman found himself involved in what would be the last engagement of the Revolutionary War. Disaster awaited them. Bakeman’s story was well-documented through his pension record in 1834.

Thomas Dority enlisted in Natick, Massachusetts into the company of Capt. James Mellen, in Col. Jonathan Ward’s regiment, and was present at the Battle of Bunker Hill.

Henry & Catherine Eckerdt Farm

Henry and Catherine Eckerdt immigrated from Bohemia to the U.S. between 1850 and 1855, arriving in Michigan in 1857. In 1862, the Eckerdts purchased and settled on their farm in Port Oneida. The Henry and Catherine Eckerdt farm has been described as an "excellent example of an historical farm"; it was the site of many dances enjoyed by community residents. Catherine Eckerdt was a midwife and community nurse.
North Rim General Store

CLOSED: 2024 SEASON OVER. At the entrance to the campground, the store offers coffee and quick breakfast items in the morning. It also has basic grocery items. Snacks, trail mixes, hiking accessories, soft and hard beverages, and souvenirs. There is a microwave to warm your food. Ed Galloway’s Totem Pole Park is the oldest and largest example of a folk art environment in Oklahoma; its construction lasting from 1937 to 1961. Totem Pole Park contains the original, highly decorated creations of Galloway, one of Oklahoma’s premier folk artists and significant in the “visionary art” movement.
Minuteman Missile National Historic Site Visitor Center

The visitor center is the best place to begin your visit to the park and explore the story of the Minuteman Intercontinental Ballistic Missile System and its role in the larger context of the Cold War. Staff are available daily to assist visitors in learning more about the park. Visitor amenities include restrooms, public wi-fi, exhibits, park film, and a bookstore. During the summer travel counselors from the South Dakota Department of Tourism are available.

Not only was Cruzatte’s fiddle and the lively dancing of the others common during holidays and layover days, it was an important part of the Corps’ relations with Native people, who often requested demonstrations of song and dance.
