Trinity Site, NM

On July 16, 1945, Manhattan Project scientists detonated the world’s first atomic device, known as “the Gadget,” at 5:29 am Mountain War Time. The US Army conducted the test at the Trinity Site in the Jornada del Muerto desert about 210 miles (337 km) south of Los Alamos, New Mexico. Today the Trinity Site is part of the White Sands Missile Range and can only be visited during a Trinity Site Open House, typically hosted twice a year.

“...the people…are moving not from choice to an unknown region not desired by them.” Elijah Hicks wrote these words to Chief John Ross while camped at Port Royal, Tennessee in October 1838. Port Royal was the last place over 10,000 Cherokees slept in Tennessee before crossing into Kentucky. They were travelling along the Great Western Road, part of the Northern Route, which ran from Nashville, Tennessee to Missouri. Visitors can walk about a 1/4 mile of that historic roadbed.

Asan Beach Unit

In 1944, this seaside park, known locally as Assan Beach Park, was the site of fierce fighting. Assan Beach was the northern most of the two landing beaches used by American troops during the first days of the Battle of Guam. Today, the Asan Beach Unit is home to remains of the Imperial Japanese defenses and memorials to those who died during the battle.

The Rapid Ethnographic Assessment Project (REAP) for the Asan Beach and Agat units of the park documented the mythic landscape, traditional practices, and ethnographic resources of the CHamoru and other traditionally associated people. It included interviews with eight individuals and incorporated existing archival and published information relevant to summarizing traditional cultural practices and cultural resources within the Asan and Agat units of the park.

Two-year summary of findings from amphibian monitoring in Naval Live Oaks Area of Gulf Islands National Seashore, near Pensacola, Florida. Treefrogs and other amphibians are monitored at two sites near freshwater ponds using PVC pipes and plywood coverboards. Amphibian community composition and changes in the relative abundance of common species are tracked over time as indicators of park ecological health.
Yavapai Geology Museum

Open daily: 8 am - 7 pm. Yavapai Geology Museum offers one of the best vantage points for an overview of Grand Canyon geology. The building is right on the very edge of the canyon rim at Yavapai Point, The Museum Features: a bookstore and museum shop, large picture windows for viewing the canyon, and a variety of exhibits about the geology of Grand Canyon. Restrooms are in a separate building adjacent to the parking lot. The shuttle bus stop is also on the parking lot.

Early entrepreneurs started a boating business to shuttle hikers across the lake to the mouth of Cascade Canyon. Today, Jenny Lake Boating offers shuttle services to sightseers and hikers, and scenic cruises to those who wish to enjoy a quiet trip on the lake.
Reimer's Cabin

Jenny Lake has long been a popular destination for recreation. In the early 1930s, new hiking trails, horse rentals, and a shuttle boat service provided visitors an opportunity to explore their new park. Shuttle boat operator Kenneth Reimer built this cabin at the edge of the lake in 1937 to support his business. The cabin is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
